A 100% worker-member food coop is a neighborhood supermarket run by its members, who are also the sole co-owners of the store.
Each co-owner / member regularly participates in the day-to-day operations of the store by doing checkout, cleaning, receiving deliveries, stocking shelves etc. A commitment of around 3 hours every 4 weeks is typical.
The economic model allows the cooperative to offer its products at attractive prices, thus broadening access to quality food.
Unlike a capitalist supermarket, the quality of the range of products on offer is the goal of the store, and not just a means to generate returns on shareholder investments. That changes everything.
